The Summer I Destroyed You isn’t your ordinary contemporary romance. Keep in mind that from the very beginning, Elizabeth O’Roark lets it be known that there is sensitive subject matters in this story. The subject of bullying and body shaming of the main character, Emerson Hughes stuck with me because I honestly could relate to her.
From the very beginning, Emmy had one goal in mind, destroying every single person and what they loved most for their treatment of her for the majority of her young life. When she returns to Elliott Springs, the small town she was sent to for extensive development to turn the small town into a more upscale community, all Emmy can think of how it will be a sure fire way to ruin the lives of her bullies who did the same to her.
Emmy is tough as nails on the outside, however, inside is that young girl/early teen who is hurting. In her mind, she’s not lovable; how can she be when the parents who are to give so much it takes it away. Her mother was absolutely disgusting toward her. It broke my heart at the words she said to her.
I absolutely loved Liam Doherty. He is Emmy’s knight in shining armor, even before she even knew who he was. Liam didn’t take kindly of his friends talking crap about Emmy and her weight. The more time Liam mad Emmy spend together the more he starts chipping away at her tough demeanor. He is so patient with her and in so many ways, explains why he doesn’t let blind dates develop. He’s holding out for Emmy.
I am so glad that Elizabeth wrote Emerson’s actions and behaviors realistic. You may not agree with how she’s acting but the more you read why, you begin to understand. As I read, despite my slight irritation of Emmy’s actions, I fully understood.
If you’re not hesitant about reading contemporary romance that has trigger warnings, The Summer I Destroyed You is one I recommend. I absolutely loved this book, and am ready to see how Harrison’s story.
